Rector's Message

Sacred Heart Catholic Church Pastor

On behalf of our family of faith here at Sacred Heart, I welcome you to our website.  I am very pleased to announce that as of February 22, 2010, Sacred Heart was elevated to the dignity of minor basilica by His Holiness Pope Benedict XVI and will now be known as the Basilica of the Sacred Heart of Jesus.  This is a great honor for Sacred Heart and a tribute to hard work over the past two years by a group of dedicated parishioners. We now become the 67th minor basilica in the United States.  This designation is in recognition of the history of the church, as well as the architecture, artistic importance, and pastoral activities.  To read more about basilicas, please click here.

Sacred Heart is located on Peachtree Street, in the heart of downtown Atlanta and, in addition to the historic character of the church recognized in the basilica designation, is considered one of the most beautiful in the southeastern U.S.  We have the distinction of being the only church in Atlanta with two spires.

Ours is a warm, friendly and diverse congregation, offering a great variety of ministries and outreach services to our growing number of individuals and families.   In recent years our parish family has nearly doubled (from 600 to 1200 registered households).   We come from all parts of the metropolitan area, including members from different socio-economic levels, racial and ethnic groups, and lifestyles.   Our schedule of Masses and opportunities for confession are set up to accommodate not only our parishioners, but also guests from nearby hotels and others who work in the downtown area.

This year we are celebrating the 131th anniversary of our founding.   Many of the original Catholic families of Atlanta worshipped here a century ago, but we’ve lost none of our beauty, our energy, and our love for Christ and the mission of the Church in this 21st century.

I hope you’ll take some time to explore this website.  It tells of a wonderful people who are proud of their Catholic faith.   It tells of opportunities to deepen our knowledge of God and minister to his people.   It tells of frequent occasions to pray and worship together.
We hope you’ll accept our invitation to join us and blend your own God-given gifts with the rest of us.

May God bless you!            Fr. T.J. Meehan, Rector
