Liturgy and Prayer Ministries
Several groups of parishioners contribute to the solemnity, beauty and grace of our worship. Training and/or preparation is necessary for most of these ministries, but interested parishioners are always welcome. Director of Faith Formation and Liturgy: Alan McGill at 404-974-2234.
Ladies Altar and Rosary Society: Organized in 1895, Altar & Rosary is the longest continuously functioning organization in the Parish. The Society is composed of a group of women who meet on Fridays to prepare the church and sacristy for Masses and other Sacraments. Known as "the chars" or "the Marthas of Sacred Heart", members dust, polish, do laundry, iron,prepare candles, straighten and take care of other necessary tasks and keep the Maintenance Department advised of any conditions that need attention. Altar Servers: An altar server at The Basilica of the Sacred Heart of Jesus can be any Catholic person (youth or adult) who has received the Sacraments of Reconciliation and Eucharist. Additionally the server must reverently and maturely conduct themselves on the altar at all times, demonstrate a personal intent to serve, possess a working knowledge of the flow and ability to actively participate in the Mass. Annulment Case Sponsors: Many people are in need of an annulment before they marry again or simply to get things right with the Church. In order to give them the special and confidential care they need, volunteers are asked to help with completion of paperwork, become familiar with Tribunal rules and channel communications to applicants from the Tribunal. Baptism Preparation Ministry: Members instruct and prepare new parents for the responsibilities of raising a child in the Catholic church. Classes are mandatory for all parents desiring the Sacrament of Baptism for their children under the age of 12. Classes take place each month on a Sunday afternoon. Instructor training is required and provided. Laypersons are encouraged to assist with this ministry. Contact Muffet Puckett at 404-522-6800, ext 2244.
Communion Visitation: Individuals are trained and assigned to visit homebound, sick or hospitalized Catholics and to bring God’s Word and the Eucharist as representatives of the Sacred Heart community. Eucharistic Adoration: Every week the Blessed Sacrament is enthroned, offering parishioners the opportunity to pray. Tuesdays immediately after the 12:10 p.m. Mass until 1:45 p.m., at the main altar of the Basilica. Entrance is through the front desk of the rectory. Contact: Alan McGill at 404-974-2234.
Evensong (Liturgy of the Hours Prayer Group): Evensong will be resuming the tradition of praying the Divine Office with parishioners on select evenings throughout the year. Sharing a strong relationship with our Holy Father as a Basilica, major papal feast days and traditional Catholic observances will set the theme of many evenings. The prayer lasts about a quarter hour and is enriched with psalms and readings from the Holy Scripture. Contact Catherine Tarbox at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Extraordinary Ministers of the Eucharist: Extraordinary Ministers distribute the Eucharist during Masses. It is one of the most important and humbling ministries in which lay people can participate. Each candidate must be a registered member of Sacred Heart for one year, be approved by the pastor and complete training offered at Sacred Heart. Flower Guild: This group is responsible for creating floral arrangements for the altar and for weddings and other church-related celebrations. Arranging generally takes place on Friday mornings at the church. Anyone with artistic flair, or the desire to gain some, is invited to join this ministry. Readers and Commentators: The Liturgical Reader Ministry at Sacred Heart provides both "Lectors" (Readers of Scripture) and "Commentators" at weekend liturgies. The "Lector" proclaims the First and/or Second Readings from the Ambo while the Commentator, from the lectern, welcomes and directs congregation through the Mass, announces hymns (when Cantor is not present), makes announcements, introduces speakers, etc. Training is provided. Sacristan: The sacristan carefully arranges the liturgical books, the vestments, and other things necessary in the celebration of Mass. Contact Jim Goodwyne at email@example.com or 404-450-9668.
Ushers: These ministers of hospitality during Mass on Saturdays, Sundays and special occasions strive to ensure the solemnity and tranquility of the liturgies. They greet parishioners and visitors, assist in seating, conduct the collections at Masses and direct the presentation of the offertory and the reception of Communion. Basilica Principal Choir: The traditional liturgical choir leads the congregation in song at the Sunday 10:00 a.m. Mass. The choir also sings at the Christmas midnight mass, during the Tridium of Holy Week and on Easter Sunday. Practice is on Wednesdays at 7:30 p.m. in the choir loft and on Sundays at 9:30 a.m. in the Large Assembly Room. Choir robes are provided. Hearts on Fire: “Hearts on Fire” is the contemporary music group that leads the congregation in song at the Sunday 6:00 p.m. Mass. Basilica Children’s Choir: The choir is open to all children of the parish in grades K-12. Rehearsals are on Sundays immediately following Religious Education classes. Lunch is provided.
